Digital badging is a type of micro-credentialing that allows people to demonstrate their competence in a skill set. These can be informal, such as the badges gamers earn for reaching certain levels of a game or the badges earned on fitness tracking apps for achieving a certain number of steps in a day.

The 2016–18 Strategic Plan called for some of the Association’s core elements to be reviewed, including the Role of the College Union Statement. In June 2017, a committee was formed to assess the current statement and determine what revisions should be made.

It has come to the attention of the Board of Trustees that as an undergraduate Porter Butts may have been a member of a student organization affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan. There is no place for racism in our association. To examine this issue, a working group is being created to look at the naming of ACUI awards and honors.

ACUI recently partnered with Indiana University to expand research in the college union and student activities field. The first project to be pursued is a qualitative study that will examine student engagement in the college union and how college unions contribute to student learning and success.

Hosting a combined total of 158 student leaders for the 2017 Institute of Leadership Education and Development (I-LEAD®), ACUI’s annual premier student program was held in early June at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell and late July at Kansas State University.

Throughout May 2017, elections occurred for regional director in Regions II, IV, VI, and VIII. Overall, there were 365 ballots cast out of 1,455 eligible voters, representing a 25.1% voter turnout.

ACUI opened the 49th annual Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio, Texas, with 828 student athletes from 85 schools. This is 120 more students than last year’s event.

Architecture firms WTW Architects, VMDO Architects, CannonDesign, Perkins+Will, and Moody Nolan received ACUI’s Facility Design Award of Excellence during the Architecture and Design Showcase on Tuesday, March 21, at the 2017 ACUI Annual Conference in Philadelphia.

Since 2012, ACUI has been a part of the Inter-association Leadership Education Collaborative (ILEC), a group of eight higher education associations committed to furthering the future of leadership education. In late 2016, ILEC produced a white paper titled: “Collaborative Priorities and Critical Considerations for Leadership Education,” which serves as an imperative for leadership educators.
